"A
FARM FOR THE FUTURE"
Saturday, 4:00 p.m. in the Sale Barn
"There is no doubt in my mind that Rebecca is opening a lot
of eyes to the unsustainability of our present food system.
Recommended for anyone with an interest in food and farming - in
fact, for anyone who eats."
-
Sami Grover, The Change
Wildlife film maker Rebecca Hosking investigates how to
transform her family's farm in Devon into a low energy farm for the
future, and discovers that nature holds the key.
With her father close to retirement, Rebecca returns to her
family's wildlife-friendly farm in Devon, to become the next
generation to farm the land. But last year's high fuel prices were a
wake-up call for Rebecca. Realizing that all food production in the
UK is completely dependent on abundant cheap fossil fuel,
particularly oil, she sets out to discover just how secure this oil
supply is.
Alarmed by the answers, she explores ways of farming without
using fossil fuel. With the help of pioneering farmers and growers,
Rebecca learns that it is actually nature that holds the key to
farming in a low-energy future.
-- Film viewing
will be followed by discussion sessions moderated by Seattle radio
host Tom Allen. If time permits, other short features will be
available, by audience choice. |

JOHN
DAY OR BUST
Learn about EVs in the Open-air Classroom at 1pm
on Sunday,
then see the OEVA members off on their return
trip to Portland!
The Oregon Electric Vehicle Association (OEVA) puts out a call
to action for all EV nthusiasts who support this vision: that
replacing internal combustion engines (ICE, now powering America's
fleet of personal vehicles) with electric drive systems is the
quickest and cheapest path to breaking our addiction to oil, cleaning
up our air and stopping the flow of our dollars to OPEC. The goal is
to promote the widespread adoption of the EV as a vehicle of utility
and adventure as well as being good for the environment.
Electric Vehicle owners and enthusiasts from all over the West
will be heading to John Day and SolWest Fair the last weekend of
July. Let's take a lesson from the history of the early days of the
auto. Individuals and groups were constantly setting out on daunting
trips across vast regions with poor-to-terrible roads, no gas
stations and no repair shops. They did it and sold a nation on the ICE.
Why
John Day?
John Day is a little town in the middle of the eastern Oregon
desert and mountains, settled in the late 1800's by gold miners,
ranchers, loggers, and timber workers. In other words, they were
hardy pioneer stock, and their spirit still dominates the town. It's
a perfect setting for the pioneers of the EV age. If you can drive an
EV to John Day, you can drive an EV just about anywhere. Check with
us for charging-stop locations.
John Day or Bust is a collaboration between the Oregon
Electric Vehicle Association, SolWest
Fair, and the Green
Living Journal.

View
the Sun Safely Through Solar-powered Telescopes
Learn about the power of the sun from a unique experience --
Solar powered solar telescopes! Solar activity is increasing as we
approach the 2013 sunspot maximum. Enjoy an awesome, beautiful, and
safe view of our star's sunspot activity, solar flares and prominences.
Bob Yoesle has two telescopes that track the sun on a
motorized mount. One of the telescopes is equipped with a "white
light" filter. It provides a view of the Sun in all visible
colors of light, although greatly reduced in brightness. The major
features visible are the surface of the Sun and sunspots -- cooler
regions where powerful magnetic fields erupt through the Sun's surface.
The other telescope is equipped with a sophisticated
"Hydrogen-alpha" filter. This shows the Sun in a beautiful
ruby-red light, and reveals solar flares and "prominences"
that are often associated with sunspots. An H-alpha Hi-res module
significantly improves the contrast provided by the telescope, as
well as decreasing the amount of scattered background light, giving a
much more detailed and "crisp" view of the Sun's
chromosphere, flares, and prominences.
The telescope mount's drive (which tracks the Sun by
compensating for the Earth's rotation), and the temperature
controlled Hydrogen-alpha filter itself, are powered by a 12 volt
battery which is recharged by a photovoltaic (PV) "solar panel."
SOLAR
AND WIND-POWERED HAM RADIO
In addition to the "short wave" HF radio station
that has been at SolWest in years past, Ralph Javins will be setting
up a VHF 2 Meter station to provide a little more interest for the
Technician Class ham radio people who may come by. The power for his
radios is generated on the fairgrounds by solar and wind. Information
will be available on how to get a ham radio license, and how ham
radio can be an aid with communication for a person living "off grid."
Some of the weather and political events experienced in recent
times have again shown that there is still merit and utility for ham
radio -- an independent communication system that does not require a
working telephone line, nor an Internet connection. By combining this
independent radio system with an independent power generation system,
we can have a truly functional independent, self-sustaining,
self-powered, reliable radio communication system.
Free fair entry Friday 5-7pm and
Sunday noon-3:30pm. |
